In the Milas district of Muğla, southwestern Türkiye, the theatre of the ancient Euromos, including the Temple of Zeus Lepsynos, is set to regain its former glory thanks to ongoing excavation work.

Turkey is undoubtedly a treasure trove of ancient ruins from thousands of years ago. To provide an example, one can easily name the theatre of the ancient city of Euromos, located in the Milas district of Muğla and home to the Temple of Zeus Lepsynos. Thanks to ongoing excavation and restoration efforts, this fantastic treasure will regain its former splendour.

As experts have expressed, Euromos is recognized as one of the region's most valuable archaeological sites, and it seems that it will continue to shed light on history with artefacts unearthed throughout the year. In compliance with the government’s strategy, once such structures are uncovered, they are swiftly restored so they can be available for tourism.

An expert who works as a faculty member at Sıtkı Koçman University’s Archaeology Department (Muğla) and serves as director of the excavation was reported to have told the media that the crew was focused on the agora, Roman bath, and Euromos Theater for the year 2024.

This ancient town, which dates back to the Carian period, is expected to offer visitors a wonderful experience. They will be able to see an agora, temple, walls, theatre, and bath, which will allow them to gain new insights into the city’s history.

On the other hand, based on explanations by the crew responsible for the excavation, it is also understood that most of the structure will be unearthed, allowing visitors to explore the site with ease. Experts note that the theatre dates back to the Hellenistic period and had a seating capacity of 2,500. They certainly hope to uncover plenty of important findings in the ongoing work at the theatre, such as discovering an altar in the centre of the orchestra or at the base of the steps, and potentially masks.

The team expressed that the work is expected to be completed within 1.5 years, with the goal of turning the theatre into a venue for artistic events. They also note that restoration efforts continue at the Roman Bath as part of the "Future Heritage Project."

The ancient city of Euromos, located in the Selimiye neighbourhood and built in the 2nd century B.C., is also home to the Temple of Zeus Lepsynos, one of the best-preserved Roman temples in Anatolia.
