NEWS Daron ACEMOGLU, a Turkish Citizen and Professor at MIT Receives Nobel Prize In Economics

The Nobel Prize in Economics has been awarded to Daron Acemoğlu, Simon Johnson, and James Robinson. Acemoğlu becomes the third person from Turkey to receive a Nobel Prize, following Orhan Pamuk (Literature) and Aziz Sancar (Chemistry).

The Nobel Prize in Economics for 2024 was awarded to Acemoğlu, Johnson, and Robinson for their research on "how institutions are formed and how they affect prosperity." Acemoğlu, who is a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), was recognized alongside Simon Johnson, also at MIT, and James Robinson from the University of Chicago.

Jakob Svensson, Chair of the Economic Sciences Prize Committee, commented on the award, saying, "Reducing the vast income disparities between countries is one of today’s greatest challenges. The laureates highlighted the importance of institutions in this context."

Daron Acemoğlu has gained global recognition for his work on political economy, economic development, and inequality. He has co-authored several influential books with Robinson, including *Why Nations Fail: The Origins of Power, Prosperity, and Poverty* and *The Narrow Corridor*, and with Johnson, *Power and Progress: Our Thousand-Year Struggle Over Technology and Prosperity*.

The Nobel Prize, one of the most prestigious awards in the world, is presented by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and is worth 11 million Swedish kronor (about 1.1 million USD).

Who is Daron Acemoğlu?

Born on September 3, 1967, in Istanbul, Acemoğlu completed his undergraduate degree at York University in 1989, his master's degree in 1990, and his PhD in Economics in 1992 from the London School of Economics (LSE). He has been a professor at MIT since 2005 and was awarded the John Bates Clark Medal for his contributions to economic thought and knowledge.
