Turkey Homes Sponsors Fethiye’s Race for Life In 2019
Turkey Homes is proud to be one of the sponsors of this year’s Race for Life taking place in Fethiye on the 27th of October 2019. Departing from the town square in front of the culture centre at 10 a.m. this will be the fifth year of the event.
Using the slogan, “Run it, walk it, beat it,” every year Turkish and foreign residents take part. The race called “Yasam Icin Yaris” in Turkish aims to raise money towards cancer awareness, research, and treatment for Fethiye residents diagnosed with the disease.
Their website says that annually, doctors diagnose many people with lung, breast, prostate, colon, and gastric cancer, although over 200 different types of the disease exist. Their estimations also say this year 400 to 500 people in Fethiye will be diagnosed with cancer.
Race for Life in Fethiye
The Race for Life in Fethiye follows on from the UK version of which the idea was first born in 1994, but it wasn’t until many years later, that the concept first arrived in Turkey’s Fethiye region.
The first race organised by British residents Chris and George Rimmer saw 60 people walk, jog or run the 5-kilometre course. In 2018, over 300 people turned out for the event making it Fethiye’s biggest and most successful fundraiser to date.
Before the race, they also held a one-minute silence to remember loved ones who had lost their lives to cancer. Now in its fifth year, all ages are welcome to take part and organisers stress it is not about winning but a chance for the community to come together for a worthwhile cause.
Where Does Money Raised Go to?
Yasim Icin Yaris website says that in 2015, 2016 and 2017, money raised went towards equipment for Fethiye’s Devlet hospital’s oncology department. This included an endoscope to view organs inside the body, like the colon, stomach, and bladder. In the following years, they also donated a bronchoscope and furniture to the chemotherapy ward.
Organisers are hoping for a big turnout in 2019 because last year, participants raised a staggering 124,500 Turkish lira towards helping residents of Fethiye diagnosed with cancer.
