Things to do in Gocek
Have you ever been to St. Tropez? If so, you will know that it attracts the rich and famous keen to soak up the sun, shop, eat great food and bob about in bays on their motor yachts. The pretty town of Gocek, 20 minutes drive from Dalaman Airport, is referred to by many as Turkey's equivalent. It's one of those places where the stars take a stroll around town trying to look inconspicuous, shop in designer boutiques or live it up in their luxury property in Gocek Hills or on beautiful Venician style developments with moorings for their dinghy's. But, there are more things to do in Gocek than simply star spot, and you don't need a celebrity wallet to enjoy the town - Gocek boasts something for everyone!
About Gocek
Gocek is a natural harbour tucked away at the end of the Gulf of Fethiye. It's a yachtsman's dream. For centuries Gocek has offered shelter to passing ships, the Ottomans even used the town as a base for exporting chrome and goods. For sailors today, Gocek's luxury marinas and pretty resort centre ensure it's an attractive stop for those looking to explore the beauty of the Turquoise coast. Gocek's neighbouring bays, array of hidden coves and the area's famed 12 islands serve up some of the best sailing along the Turkish coast. The town is also extremely well placed for popping over to the Greek islands - Rhodes is one of the closest.
As is the case with most towns and cities in Turkey, Gocek is steeped in a fascinating history. Stray a mile or so out of the town and you will find burial tombs dating back more than 2000 years. Gocek is also close to Fethiye (20 minutes drive), that was one of the most significant Lycian cities in Turkey. Perhaps one of the most interesting stories related to Gocek is that of Icarus. If legend is to be believed, it was here, in the waters off Gocek bay, that Icarus fell following his famous flight.

Sail - Get out on the water and explore! You can't spend time in Gocek without heading out and enjoying the coastline - it's why the area is famous! You don't have to own a yacht to make the most of the local waters, there are many daily boat trips and 'blue cruises' available from the harbour side or via local agents. You can opt for a cheap and cheerful day trip stopping off at a few bays for a dip and some lunch, or you could splash the cash and hire a crewed boat or yacht to yourself, a great option for larger families and groups.
Discover Gocek's 'secret' beaches. Gocek is not a beach resort and has no main public beach in the town centre. There are, however, a number of private beach clubs like the fancy D-Marin (stunning!), or some great little stretches accessed via a water taxi, daily boat or within short drive. All options easily arranged locally.
Shop - take your credit card for an outing. Gocek isn't a large resort, it's small and sophisticated. The majority of the shops and restaurants are focused around the main harbour-side. Most of the centre is pedestrianised with a warren of little alleys leading back from the seafront. There are some lovely little finds and all manner of boutiques, jewellery shops, designer stores and trinket shops. There's also your normal array of little supermarkets selling basic supplies for those staying at a self-catering property in Gocek.
Have a go at haggling at the Sunday market. Each Sunday the market square near the back of the town centre fills with life when the travelling market comes to town. Here you can find all manner of goods from your 'genuine fake' clothes, watches and handbags, to herbs, spices and some great fresh seasonal produce. Practice your bartering skills or simply potter along and people watch, it's a great way to spend a couple of hours.
Enjoy the food. Gocek has a wonderful selection of restaurants and bars suiting most tastes and budgets. From fancy fusion food and swanky bistro classics, to traditional Turkish dishes or a simple street side kebab, there's a restaurant or street vendor to suit. Buy a property in Gocek. Ok, this is the most expensive option but if you have a few grand to spare and are familiar with the adage, "Location. Location. Location", Gocek boasts one of the best locations in Turkey. For years Gocek has attracted the wealthy, be it on their yachts or buying up mansions or summer properties in the area. Since 1998, the area has fallen under strict protection laws limiting development. This has left the bay tasteful, with no high rises or sprawling all-inclusive resorts. Gocek is classy, it's a chic and elegant port. From April to October the streets fill with Istanbul socialites, the million dollar playboys and stars of the stage and screen. Many now own property in the area. Due to the area’s clientele there will always be a demand for property in Gocek, property prices will always be on the rise. Those looking for a buy to let property in Turkey are also in for a treat as apartments and villas in Gocek attract premium rental returns.
